Biography

José Antonio Domené is one of the most outstanding Spanish harpists of his generation. Born in Alberca de las Torres (Region of Murcia), he graduated at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid and, later, at the Royal College of Music in London. Domené holds a PhD in Music from the Polytechnic University of Madrid.

He is the principal harpist of the Oviedo Filarmonía orchestra, as well as principal collaborator of the Navarra Symphony Orchestra. Since 2025, he teaches at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid. He has also been a visiting professor of chamber music and orchestral repertoire at the “Achille Peri” Conservatory of Music in Reggio Emilia (Italy).

Domené has collaborated with most of Spain’s leading orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic of Galicia, the Symphony Orchestra of the Principality of Asturias, the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra, the Castilla y León Symphony Orchestra, the RTVE Symphony Orchestra, the Madrid Symphony Orchestra (Teatro Real), the Orchestra of the Community of Madrid (Teatro de la Zarzuela), the National Orchestra of Spain, the Symphony Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the Valencia Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Valencian Community (Palau de les Arts), the Symphony Orchestra of the Region of Murcia, and the Balearic Islands Symphony Orchestra.

Among the international orchestras with which he has performed, are the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France (France), the Thüringen Philharmonie Gotha-Eisenach (Germany), the Orchestra of the Teatro Regio of Turin (Italy), the Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto (Portugal), the Slovenská Filharmónia (Slovenia), the St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra (Russia), and the Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra (USA).

A founding member of the Spanish Harp Association (AEDA), Domené has toured extensively throughout Spain, performing in the Country’s most prestigious concert halls, including the National Auditorium of Music, the Teatro Real, the Juan March Foundation, the Palau de la Música Catalana, and the Auditori of Barcelona. He has also given concerts in venues such as Cadogan Hall and Wigmore Hall in London. In 2020, he performed in the world premiere of Raquel García Tomás’s chamber opera for soprano and harp, Per precaució, at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, and in 2023, he made his solo debut at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona under the baton of Maestro Christoph Eschenbach. Always interested in the lyric repertoire, he has accompanied singers in programs at the Teatro de la Zarzuela, the Juan March Foundation, and LifeVictoria, among others.

His recordings include Joan Manén’s work, Diálogo, for string trio, flute, and harp (La Mà de Guido, 2018), Serge Lancen’s Harp Concerto (Bilbao Musika, 2018), and the album Aires de España, as harp duo with harpist Davide Burani (SMC Records, 2019). He has participated in numerous live recordings, both as a soloist and with various chamber ensembles, for Radio Clásica (RNE) and Catalunya Música (Catalonia Radio).
